Medical Staffing Basics

What is a Medical Staffing Agency?

A medical staffing agency is the middle man between a healthcare organization and a potential medical professional. Healthcare organizations in need of medical professionals contact a medical staffing agency in order to find medical professionals who are in high demand. This can be for short-term contracts or long-term contracts.

What Does a Medical Staffing Agency do?

A medical staffing agency is hired by a healthcare organization to bring in a contracted medical professional. This can be under a local crisis where more help is needed, during flu season, when a healthcare organization is looking for a specific specialist, or if there is a high demand for a certain type of medical professional.

A medical staffing agency takes care of a lot of complexity for healthcare organizations. This includes things like: drug tests, licenses, paying employees, and education validation. This relationship makes it easier for a healthcare organization to find medical professionals, keep positions filled, and reduce the liability that comes with directly hiring employees. They make it so that a healthcare organization doesn’t have to use its resources to track down potential employees, but can focus on the medicine.

For Medical Professionals

If a medical professional is in between jobs, a staffing agency makes it easier for medical professionals to find one. They build the relationship and reputation on behalf of the medical professionals.

For Healthcare Organizations

A medical staffing agency simplifies things for a healthcare organization. When a company hires directly they have to have a whole HR department. A medical staffing agency takes all of that away. Instead of having to pay out weekly, the healthcare organization is able to send out one big payment that the staffing agency pays out weekly to the medical professionals. The medical staffing agency takes care of any compliances, or insurance information, again eliminating the need for a healthcare organization to have an complex HR department.

Who Medical Staffing Agencies Hire

Medical Staffing agencies are able to hire out any position that is needed in the medical field. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Registered Nurses
  • Doctors
  • Pharmacists
  • Phlebotomists
  • X-ray technicians
  • Nurse practitioners

Benefits

For the medical professional this is a great option when you don’t want to be tied down to any certain location/healthcare organization,  when you want more exposure to a wider variety of different regional health issues, or when you are in between jobs and need to pick up some work.

For the healthcare organization this is a great option because a staffing agency handles all the paperwork, hiring, firing, and payments. They also fill in any seasonal needs the client might have. The client just gives them the position info, and then the medical staffing agency finds them candidates for a fee. A medical staffing agency is generally more flexible, which in turn makes things run smoother within a Healthcare organization.

Downside

Medical staffing agencies can be expensive, which ends up taking away potential earnings from the medical professional. Another downfall is that if a medical professional is looking for job stability, and turns to a staffing agency to get that, there is a higher chance that they will not find any stability at all.

On the flip side when a healthcare organization is looking to work with a medical staffing agency, they have to choose the right one, so it’s somewhat risky. Not every staffing agency is reliable. The idea is that they will be reliable and useful, but that’s not always the case.
